12— SUMMERFEST FAMILY THEATRE, bandshell area of Baker Park, Frederick. Enjoy a free performance with Slim Harrison and the Sunnyland Band at 10:30am. Celebrate the end of summer with a special social following the final program. Games, treats, and fun will fill the park from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. FREE. 301-600-2489.

14 – 15— WAR RETURNS TO SOUTH MOUNTAIN, South Mountain State Battlefield, 6620 Zittlestown Road, Middletown. Join John A. Miller, interpreter at the battlefield, as he conducts an hour long talk about Major General Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the north. The talk will cover South Mountain before and after the Battle of Gettysburg and will begin at 1 p.m. on August 14 and 15 at the Washington Monument Museum. Included will be a brief tour of the Cumberland Valley from atop the Washington Monument. 301-432-8065.

14— PADDLE, WINE, AND CONCERT, River & Trail Outfitters, 604 Valley Road, Knoxville, MD. Tucked in the woods on Tarara's 475 acres, the concert stage hangs (suspended) next to Shadow Lake and creates the perfect venue for summer blues, 80s, 90s and contemporary pop hits. Join River & Trail for a guided leisurely paddle along the Potomac River, ending at Tarara just before the concert begins. 15— ICE CREAM SOCIAL AND ANTIQUE CAR SHOW, The Children’s Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park, 1611 North Market Street, Frederick. An afternoon of old-fashioned fun in the park featuring a show of 100+ antique vehicles and the Children’s Museum’s ice cream social. 21— MURDER AND MAYHEM WALKING TOURS, Historical Society of Frederick County, 24 East Church St., Frederick. Join the Historical Society on a walk through time and hear about some of the most scandalous, gruesome, and unbelievable moments in Frederick’s past. $ 301-663-1188.

SEPTEMBER

1—MOMMY & ME & AN OWL MAKES THREE, Cunningham Fall State Park, Manor Area Visitors Center, 14039 Catoctin Hollow Rd., Thurmont. Appropriate for newborns to children five years of age. Moms and dads can bond with their young for a 30 to 45 minute program filled with nature–themed stories, songs, puppets, crafts, and a visit from a very special friend. 3, 10, 17, 24— MUSIC ON THE TERRACE, C. Burr Artz Public Library/2nd Floor, 110 East Patrick Street, Frederick. Free concerts held every Friday in September. Tickets or reservations are not required. Bring your lunch, enjoy great music, soak up the September sunshine and take in the beautiful views of downtown Frederick and Carroll Creek Park. 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 301-600-1629.

4 & 5—14TH ANNUAL LABOR DAY ARTILLERY WEEKEND, Gettysburg National Military Park, 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA. Volunteer groups representing Union and Confederate troops provide a weekend of "living history" at Gettysburg National Military Park. The weekend will feature artillery from the Maryland State Park Service and Purcell’s Battery. Camp and programs will be at Pitzer Woods, auto tour stop number 6. Free admission. 301-846-8065.

4— FIRST SATURDAY: AROUND THE WORLD IN 15 BLOCKS, Market, Patrick, Carroll, Church and East streets including Everedy Square & Shab Row, downtown Frederick. Go around the world in 15 blocks of Downtown Frederick with international dance demonstrations, music and activities from various countries. Also get your passport stamped in different “countries”. 10, 11, 12— THURMONT & EMMITSBURG COMMUNITY SHOW, Catoctin High School, 14745 Sabillasville Road, Thurmont. Local community show with exhibits such as farm and garden, canned items, sewing, baked products, youth and junior departments, arts and crafts, photography, beef, sheep, sewing, and goat show and sale. 301-271-2104.

10— LIGHT THE CREEK, Carroll Creek Amphitheater, downtown Frederick. Kick off “In The Street” festivities with a live concert, beer, wine, food, and the opportunity to support a local charity. 6 p.m. -9 p.m. 301- 600-2489.

11 & 12— FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, Fox's Gap, 6620 Zittlestown Road, Middletown. Living historians portray members of Confederate Brigadier General Samuel Garland’s North Carolina Brigade and Union Brigadier General Jacob Cox’s Kanawha Division. Guided walking tours feature vignettes of specific aspects from the Battle for Fox’s Gap. At these vignettes, living historians will demonstrate tactics, drill, and soldier life, as described by veterans of the battle. Tours leave the parking area at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Free admission. 301-846-8065.

11—IN THE STREET, downtown Frederick. Enjoy a full day of activities including a runner's race, live entertainment, beer and wine gardens, children's activities to celebrate the 1980s renovation of downtown’s main street. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. 301-600-2489.

11— FAMILY WORKSHOP SERIES: DOLL QUILTS, Museum of Frederick County History, 24 East Church Street, Frederick. Families will love this morning of crafts and fun at the Museum of Frederick County History. Kids ages six to ten are invited to learn some basic quilting and sewing skills and make a small quilt for their favorite doll. RSVP required. $
